The Masterclasses

The Masterclasses have been developed in line with current trends in the marketplace and insight into the business of motorsport which has highlighted key areas that would benefit from a support through a business lens.

Various motorsport organisations have been consulted in relation to pertinent and varied topics and their content. This has allowed us to create a list of topics to launch the masterclass series with:

Winning with the Media: Preparing for Interviews

This masterclass is ideal for team managers, drivers or anyone who has to deal with the media in the course of their job. You’ll get insider tips on the motorsport PR machine including how to prepare for a media announcement, how to get your message across succinctly and how to cope and deliver updates on camera in a crisis.

This masterclass is delivered by motorsport PR expert James Bailey who has extensive experience training people to make the most of media opportunities. With cameras in everyone’s hands these days there isn’t always time to pre-plan. This masterclass will give you the confidence and skills to handle even the most difficult interview like a pro.

Contractual Obligations in Motorsport

This masterclass examines the commercial contracts within motorsport. You’ll look at contractual obligations, the drafting of legally binding contracts, implied and express terms and creating contracts for international business dealings including sponsorship. This masterclass is led by Genevieve Gordon, a specialist in sports law and governance.

Note – this masterclass does not constitute legal advice.

How to Use Motorsport to Achieve Business & Marketing Goals

For 60 years, the British Touring Car Championship has been the UK’s most popular motorsport series and for nearly a decade it was the envy of the world.

Masterclass host and motorsport marketing expert, Andy King, offers an insider’s view from the racetrack to the boardroom, detailing how motorsport can be leveraged for commercial success for any business. This Masterclass uses two standout examples of how motorsport and its global reach helped two large brands, Volvo and Olympus, to achieve strategic business and marketing goals which surpassed their expectations.

Attracting Effective Sponsors

Fan Engagement in Motorsport

Fans are the lifeblood of any sport. This masterclass looks at the psychology and motivations behind fan behavior and how to use tried and tested techniques to engage with fans and turn them into followers.

You’ll look at a range of modern marketing methods, including social media, sponsorship and live media and learn how to apply them to your own organization and target audience. You’ll discover the best touch points for attracting fans as well as ways to turn them into loyal supporters.

Commerce in Motorsport

Motorsport is, without doubt, one of the most expensive elite sports in which to participate. The Commerce in Motorsport Masterclass looks at the costs associated with the sport as well as developing a credible brand, generating revenue and sponsorship and the key elements of running a financially successful race team, venue or event.

You’ll also get an introduction to the FIA tendering process, so this masterclass is ideal for anyone looking to create a race team or conduct business as a supplier into the industry.

Key Elements to Change Management

Our Change Management one day masterclass won’t tell you how to solve all your business challenges, but it will give you a range of tools to make effective change happen in your company or team.

In business, many well-intended organisational change initiatives fail to deliver. In our masterclass we will explore the reasons why a vision doesn’t always translate into action. Whether you are a small team trying to get everyone to pull in the same direction, or a larger corporation with a transformational vision, this seminar will provide a route map to guide you to success.

Ethics in Sports Management & Governance

Navigating the complex corporate concepts of ethics and governance can be tricky. In this masterclass you’ll get an in-depth introduction to the moral, social and environmental considerations which affect motorsport management and governance. Business ethics issues can range from bribery and corruptions to discrimination and corporate responsibility.

You’ll look at challenges specific to the industry and learn how to create ethical policies and practises within a motorsport business.

Motorsport Brands, their Extension & Future Trends

The world of motorsport moves quickly. Being able to anticipate and adapt to future challenges as well as spot emerging trends can be critical to the success of any motorsport venture. In this masterclass you’ll look at successful brands within the sport as well as offshoot industries including retailers, gaming companies, affiliate brands and suppliers.

You’ll also learn about accessing sponsors and fans and how communicating with an audience is key to building a successful brand and generating revenue.

Marketing for Motorsport Businesses

This Masterclass will focus on the basics of sports marketing. You’ll explore all the fundamental elements of effective marketing, including market research, the marketing mix and customer segmentation. The session will provide a mix of established marketing theory along with practical workshop sessions where you can start applying marketing principles to your own organisation.

You’ll also look at fan engagement, customer attitudes and creating a credible value proposition. At the end of this full-day masterclass you’ll have all the tools you need to create your own marketing plan relevant to your business.

History, Sporting & Commercial Structure of Motorsport

This half-day masterclass focusses on the history and development of motorsport into a global billion-dollar business. Industry expert Andrew Coe will take you through the origins of motorsport and discuss the commercial management and regulatory protocols that govern motorsport at national and international level.

You’ll get a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of governing bodies, regulators and industry associations, as well as look at the impact motorsport has on other industries in terms of innovation and technological advancement.

Available Dates

Each masterclass follows a set format which will engage the participant throughout the session and offer continuity in learning throughout the day. The masterclasses are made up of clearly defined topics and sub-topics being explained and expanded on with an effective interactive learning experience protocol through expeditionary learning techniques.

How are the Masterclasses delivered?

Delivery Style

Expeditionary learning is based on the idea that there is considerable educational and professional value in encouraging participants out of their immediate business environment (even if virtually or through knowledge-based examples). Examples enable participants to learn about the workings of the industry and to engage in specific study related to the environment in which they work. Technology can be used to augment such expeditions, but the primary focus is to learn from experts in the industry and develop a further understanding of the masterclass content through practical scenarios applicable to their own work environment.

Each masterclass includes a ‘take-away’ relevant to the content explained during the day which will encourage utilisation of learned skills and ultimately a ROI (return on investment) for the participant and their organisation.
