Naomi's NMA Experience

Hello! Who are you and what course did you study?

Hello! I am Naomi! I have recently completed the Business of Motorsport Master’s degree. I’m due to attend the graduation ceremony in September.

Tell us about your background.

I have worked in automotive for many years now, predominantly in Product Management during which I’ve worked for some well-known car brands. I have recently started a new role with Contech’s, providing a service to McLaren Automotive.

Why did you choose to study at the National Motorsport Academy?

I chose to study with NMA as I am a huge motorsport fan, so the subject was interesting to me. It’s also a subject that’s linked closely to automotive. As someone that didn’t get a degree when I was younger, I was accepted onto the course due to my automotive industry experience. The course was also very flexible in terms of being able to study from home.

How did NMA’s flexibility fit around your life?

I studied whilst working full-time and found it flexible enough to allow for all my studying. It helped that I was studying a subject that I was really interested in which meant it did not feel like work at all. I really enjoyed learning more about Motorsport.

How did you find your time at NMA?

I really enjoyed studying with the NMA due to the ease of the whole process as well as all the tutors being very knowledgeable and supportive.

What was your favourite module?

Every module was really interesting, and I learned a lot throughout. However, my favourite module was module 1 – the history of motorsport.  I loved learning about how the introduction of the car came about and how this linked to the early days of racing.

How has a degree with NMA helped you to achieve your career goals?

I’ve only recently achieved it but having a degree in Motorsport listed on my C.V. has already made it stand out to employers. Within just a few months of finishing my degree, I’ve managed to land a role at Contech’s as a supplier to McLaren. Many employers list a degree as a job requirement, and having not had one previously it gave me much more confidence when applying for new roles within motorsport.

What would you say to potential students that are considering to study at NMA?

I would say to any students considering studying with the NMA – go for it! The courses are flexible, affordable, and I have also made some great industry contacts along the way. If you’re interested in having a career in motorsport the Business of Motorsport course gives you a good understanding of how the industry works behind all of the glitz and glamour that we see on the TV.

Lastly… what’s your dream role? Do you think the NMA can help you to get that dream role?

Working in a race team is a dream role for me, I would be happiest working a hands-on role where I get to travel to the races across the globe.  The most important thing to me is that I’m doing something I enjoy. Having a motorsport qualification will help me get there as it demonstrates to potential employers that I am serious and invested in a career in this exciting industry.
